Bath and North-East Somerset
We were delighted to receive an NHS Involvement to Impact Award (i2i) 2008 for outstanding service user involvement in this project.
What do people want from end-of-life care?
Bath and Northeast Somerset PCT asked us to find out local people’s views and preferences on end-of-life care services and recommend how these services could be improved.
Together with our partner charities, we approached this sensitive subject through focus groups and one-to-one interviews with people affected by MS, Parkinson’s disease and motor neurone disease.
We also ran stakeholder conferences with service users, health and social care professionals and voluntary sector staff, to ensure broad engagement in the project.
Results
Following our our recommendations, the PCT put the following interventions into place:
- a training programme in Advance Care Planning for healthcare staff
- a reference group of service users and carers to monitor the PCT’s progress
- a therapeutic discussion group for service users to discuss end of life
- implementation of the Gold Standards Framework and the Liverpool Care Pathway for the Dying.
